Beatrix, Smirligans, Cedar Accessories ~ November 9, 2025

The shop was bustling last weekend during the Knitting in the U.S.A. book signing event with Nancy Bates. Nancy is such a kind and warm person and she signed all the books I had in stock! So even if you missed the event, you can still get a signed copy...while supplies last. And I'm slowly building my inventory of new beanie kits from the new book.

I celebrated my Double Nickels (55th) birthday this past week...thus my proclamation that Life is Good! I am so grateful that I have such a competent staff that I was able to escape for 4 days. I went glamping at the fabulous Huttopia Wine Country. The place was so peaceful and serene and I was able to do so many things that bring me joy. I finished my Ovis Sweater in Rambouillet and cast on my Sunday Sweater in Beatrix. I knit and listened to audiobooks and wandered around a beautiful area with Beverly!

I'm also grateful for the thoughtful happy birthday messages and cards I have received from this community.

Malabrigo Mania, AIO Knit Kits, Cocoknits ~ October 31, 2025

Some of you may be celebrating Halloween, Dia de los Muertos, All Saints' or All Souls' Days this weekend, but I'm celebrating Knitting in the U.S.A.! I've been waiting for the Nancy Bates Book Signing event for months and it's finally happening this Sunday November 2nd from 12 -3PM!

I have plenty of copies of her books on hand for purchase and signing or your can bring your own. Nancy loves seeing her patterns brought to life, so don't be shy about bringing in your completed beanies and showing off your talent!

I have many ready-to-go kits in stock, but if there's one you really want, please order online, call or email in advance so I can be sure to have the kit ready for you. And I have a special sweet gift with the purchase of any book or kit.

Rambouillet, Knitting the USA Kits, Harmonious Sock ~ October 24, 2025

I can't believe how fast October has flown by! The Scarecrows will be in Cambria for 1 more week...but the Cambria Scarecrow Fest Beanie and Yarn will stick around.

We've had a lot of sun in Cambria, but the temperatures have started to drop this week. It's time to start putting sleeves on my sweaters! I cast on the Ovis Sweater using the new Rambouillet yarn this morning. I'm loving it so far!

Good thing I finished my new Bracken vest this week! From the moment I saw this vest in the Tin Can Knits newsletter, I could not stop thinking about it. I used the Natural colored Ideal yarn from Manos and I picked a classic brown leather knot button.

I had so much fun teaching my 1st Intarsia Colorwork Knitting class and observing Kathy's 1st Christmas Balls Workshop this week. I love seeing all the yarns that people are choosing and their excitement with their progress on their projects!

Trendsetter Kits, New Urth Yarns, Butterfly Cowl ~ October 10, 2025

Happy Friday! I'm excited to hang out with my Friday Fiber Friends in the shop today from 12 - 1:30PM and finish up my Attabi Scarf!

Last weekend was a wonderful busy blast! Cambria provided perfect weather for the Smirligans pop-up event and the new colorways were a huge hit. And I am so grateful for the outpouring of kind words and congratulatory messages that I received for my 2nd Anniversary.

I kept myself busy this week adding new yarns from Urth/Gusto and creating some new kits and knitting my own Butterfly Cowl!

2nd Anniversary Flash Sale TODAY ~ October 5, 2025

TODAY marks 2 years since I opened the doors of Ball & Skein as owner. What a chaotic day that was...my employee lasted ~30 minutes before being taken ill with food poisoning and credit card processing wasn't set up yet. I called for help and Kris and Oz showed up! This is my favorite weekend of the year...my Shopiversary! It was 2 years ago that the shop transitioned from Kris & Oz to me. What an awesome journey it has been!

I also love this weekend because the scarecrows come out in Cambria! It's Scarecrow season in Cambria and Stanley Stitcher is back to welcome you to the shop this year! Cara, Josie, and I created Stanley last year during a workshop.

I designed a new beanie to highlight the Scarecrow Fest colorway of the Cambria DK yarn.

And I'm delighted to host Heather Wiebe from Smirligans for a popup event all day Saturday at the shop!

Where did summer go? The Autumnal Equinox happened 2 days ago, but it feels like the summer heat is just hitting Cambria.

I'm so excited to welcome Barry Klein and Heidi Berger from Trendsetter Yarns in the shop this weekend. The fun starts on Friday with a FREE Trunk Show and Wine Tasting event @ 5PM. My good friend Karin Argano will be pouring wines from the local Bassetti Family Vineyards.

Lamb & Goat, Loops & Looms ~ August 23, 2025

I have been overwhelmed with positivity and good vibes this past week in response the Fibrary! Thanks for all of your kind remarks and support. The nasturtiums are blooming and the shelves are well-stocked!

This week I finished the project I started during the Mid-Summer Tee MAL cast-on session. Here's my Tori Slipover using Lisboa. I really enjoyed working with the Lisboa yarn because it's soft and has beautiful color transitions! But I can't say the same for the slipover pattern...lots of mistakes that required lots of improvising.

Free Fiber Library, New Spiral Grain, Zauber, Felted Goods ~ August 15, 2025

I learned a new term this week..."Fogust" describes the temperate mornings in Cambria where the marine layer is particularly thick. But I'll take these cooler conditions over the heat of the rest of the country any day of the week!

i'm so happy to show off my 1st piece using the new Cambria DK yarn. I completed Blouse No. 3 in the San Simeon colorway using 4.5 skeins. The garment is soft and squishy and the color is one of my favorites!

Weekend Workshops, New Trendsetter Yarns, New Dreamy Colors ~ August 8, 2025

The Mid-Summer Tee MAL (Make-A-Long) is in full swing and I've enjoyed all the time this past week that I was able to knit with so many enthusiastic stitchers! We cast on last Sunday, sipped & stitched (while working on our tees) on Wednesday, and gathered again today @ noon for more community stitching!

Even if you missed the cast-on event last Sunday, you can still join the fun! Select a summer tee to knit or crochet, purchase the yarn at the shop or online, and we will gift you the pattern! I had been waiting for my new Cambria DK yarn to arrive to kick off the Summer Tee MAL and it arrived on Wednesday! This is a private label yarn for Ball & Skein. It's the perfect yarn for a variety of projects and I hope you love the palette as much as I do! I'm so excited for both the yarn and the MAL!

Milo Trunk Show, Emma Ball, Yarny Hair Accessories ~ June 30, 2025

My newsletter writing time was interrupted this morning due to Beverly's encounter with a skunk in the backyard last night! Pee-yew! But she did great with the de-skunking baths and now smells mostly like lavender!

Cambria Pride by the Sea was a ton of fun this year. Caitlin, Will and I all spent some time at the Ball & Skein booth and enjoyed the wonderful people and entertainers. Cambria Pride by the Sea beanie kits and/or patterns are always available!

Today is the last day of the June Juniper Moon Farm yarn sale...only a few more hours to save 15%! I received a huge re-stock of Zooey, Cotton + Merino, Cumulus, and Bud last week.

Needlepoint, Artsy, Cambria Pride ~ June 22, 2025

I had so much fun Stitching in Public last Saturday with a community of stitchers! Cambria delivered sunshine for a glorious World Wide Stitch in Public Day!

Goodies that I picked out at the H+H show in May keep arriving each week. This week, I'm happy to highlight the Needlepoint Kits from Storyteller Stitchery and accessory/project bags from Splash Fabric.

I also received a huge re-stock of many of your favorite yarns including Tillie, Pima 100, Sami, Sami XL, and Trinity Cashmere. These yarns arrived just in time before new tariff pricing kicks in. So for now, I'm able to offer these yarns at their current prices!

This week I finished the Layers of History top using Artsy by Wool Addicts. I used 4 balls of color #10 to make a short-sleeved version. I love the colors and the drape!

I love it when there is a holiday specifically for us crafters! Tomorrow (Saturday, June 14th) is World Wide Knit in Public Day. We'll be stitching in front of the shop from 1-4PM! I can't believe how quickly May is flying by and Memorial Day weekend is nearly here.

I just finished my 1st knit project using the new Natural Bag yarns...a market bag. I'm updating the pattern and will share it next week.

Next up is the Filigree knit top that's on the cover of the newest Noro Magazine #26 using Ohajiki. Hopefully the finished piece will be on display in the shop next weekend. So far, the yarn is fun to work with!

Talara, Manos Minis, New Emma Ball ~ February 23, 2025

I must admit that it was so wonderful to take a break from the shop for a few days and enjoy the Sequoia Giants!

Beverly and I stayed in a stunning Glass House on 2 private acres just outside the entrance to Sequoia National Park. We had some sunshine and some pounding rain and lots of R&R. I knit a bit, but decided to frog what I was working on. It was a colorwork piece and the colors I picked did not have enough contrast. So my greatest accomplishment from the trip was finishing both the Bridget Jones and Cobra Kai collections!

I just added classes to learn to crochet, to learn to knit, and to knit your 1st sweater. I plan to announce a much fuller class selection in the next week. Stay tuned!

I'm so excited that the Moonstone Beach Exclusive Ball & Skein color from Dream in Color is now available in Fingering, DK, and Worsted weight yarns!

Cosette, a DK weight superwash merino/cashmere/nylon blend, and Classy, worsted weight 100% superwash merino, are joined by Smooshy Cashmere, a fingering weight superwash merino/cashmere/nylon blend.

I'm working on projects to showcase these beautiful yarns. Last night I completed the Shadow Life Shawl using the DK weight Cosette. I paired it with Harvest DK by Urth yarns in Oleaster and am in love with this gorgeous piece!

The wild stormy weather of yesterday is gone and we have beautiful sunshine today to celebrate Beverly's 2nd Birthday! February 5th is also a special day for me because it's the anniversary of when I first visited Ball & Skein in Cambria and saw that sign in the shop window that changed my life. What an adventure I've been having.

Saiun, Doodle Beanie Kits, and Uniquely Ball & Skein ~ January 27, 2025

January ended up being way more busy than I ever expected! So many new yarns arrived in the shop and I had weekend events planned in coordination with the Morro Bay Bird Festival and the Cambria Art and Wine Festival.

I managed to complete some beautiful knitting projects (featured in the newsletter). I also took out my sewing machine and had some fun with a new fabric featuring yarn balls making cushion covers for the shop.

New Years Day in Cambria did not disappoint! I spent my day doing all of my favorite things...beach-combing with Beverly, casting on my Kelowna Sweater project, and eating leftover Christmas lasagne!

Last Minute Anzula/Mod Trunk Show ~ November 8, 2024

Join us in the shop on Sunday November 10th from 1-3 PM for a trunk show featuring hand dyed yarns from Anzula and Mod Yarns! Kalliope, the owner and original dyer, will be onsite showcasing these stunning, sumptuous yarns!

Anzula is located in Downtown Fresno, California. They are passionate about good yarn and vibrant colors specializing in dyeing yarn made from the most luxurious fibers in the world like cashmere, camel, tussah silk, linen, merino, targhee, tencel, alpaca, yak, and milk protein. Free Yarn Dyeing Demo, Holiday Doodles ~ November 16, 2024

Tomorrow (Sunday November 17th) is the FREE hands-on yarn dyeing demonstration! Join me in the shop parking lot from 2 - 4 PM to have some dyeing fun!

I'll be showing off the Wool Tincture Dyes. They are pre-measured acid dyes in a tea bag, so there’s no mixing or measuring involved, and no mess!

New Smirligans Hand Dyed, Yarn Dyeing Demo, Doodle Knit Directory ~ November 4, 2024

Beverly and I are heading to Big Sur for a couple nights this week so the shop is closed on both Tuesday and Wednesday this week (Nov 5 & 6). I'm looking forward to relaxing with my latest projects, the Aurea Sweater from Noro Magazine Issue 25 and a new California Poppies beanie using the new Smirligans DK yarn.

I finished my Carina Cowl this weekend and am excited to teach the colorwork class for this cowl next Monday Nov 11th. There's still room in the class and time to sign up. I even have enough yarn left to start doodling!

I took a week off from writing the newsletter and now there's so much news to share! I've added yarns from another female-owned indie dyer: Round Mountain Fibers. Join us September 13 - 16, 2024 for an exciting weekend of stitching in Cambria!

Weekend retreat planning has been in the works for ~2 months and I'm delighted to finally share the details so you can finally sign up! It's gonna be so epic that it's the only feature of this newsletter.

The weekend is an event that you do not want to miss! Both Barry Klein from Trendsetter Yarns and Nancy Bates will be leading workshops on Saturday and Sunday. LYS Day Online Discounts, New Noro Mag ~ April 29, 2024

Local Yarn Store Day 2024 was a lot of fun in the shop. We celebrated with hourly raffles for free yarn and there were some wonderful discounts on Warm & Wooly Throw Kits and Atenti and Fibres of Life bags. Those Discounts are now available online until the end of day on Wednesday May 1st (no code required).

I'm heading out of town this week to Chicago for the annual H&H Americas trade show, and I'm so excited to scope out new yarns and fiber crafts gadgets. I'll report back next week. Kris and Oz say Thank you ~ September 23, 2023

As many of you know, after 14 years at the shop we're officially retiring as of Monday, October 2.

We're beyond excited the shop will continue under new ownership. We know Annie will do a great job and you'll all love her. Yes, the shop will change, but it's also changed a lot over the last 14 years, so that won't be anything new!

As we move into this new chapter of our lives, we want to take a moment and thank you all for your support and allowing us the great privilege of running the little shop in Cambria. We also can't forget to thank our amazing vendor partners. Being able to work with and learn from Trendsetter, Manos, Berroco, Prism, Skacel, Bryson, KFI, and so many others has been such a joy and without their support the shop would never be what it is today.

Yes, the shop is a job, but it's been a great job full of amazing experiences, unique adventures, and wonderful people. We're looking forward to our next adventures and to see the wonderful things Annie has in store for you all.

Also, please be kind and patient during this time. It's not easy to take over a long time shop. Kris and Oz had 14 years to learn from their many mistakes. Be sure and give Annie and her staff, some of whom are brand new, the benefit of your kindness as they bring you many more years of the Ball & Skein.
